Glass transportation

Interleavants safely separates float glass during its storage and transportation. Makevale is a leading manufacturer of acrylic bead materials, a key component used in interleaving powders for the safe storage and transportation of float glass. Furthermore, transportation or storage creates a risk of glass surface corrosion. Interleaving powders are comprised of acrylic beads of a tight size profile with additives to prevent corrosion or staining.

Benefits of our service

  • Spherical acrylic beads mean no dents on glass
  • Narrow PSD
  • PSD profile can be customised
  • Molecular weight controlled to maintain soft properties
  • Samples available upon request

Interleaving powder

It is essential that the interleaving powder is soft enough to avoid pitting the glass and has a tight  particle size distribution (PSD). The reasons are firstly to allow a reproducible and efficient application of the powder onto the glass, and second to avoid a few large beads allowing the smaller beads to fall out when the glass is raised to the vertical position leading to glass on glass contact.

Makevale’s manufacturing technology allows the consistent production of beads with a tight, defined particle size distribution and specified flow characteristics. We are able to achieve these tight tolerances through a combination of varying surface characteristics via reagents and process, sieving, wash water type, and the addition of flow modifiers.

If you are interested in acrylic beads suitable for interleaving powders in glass storage and transportation, we have a wide range of suitable acrylics and a proven track record in producing new acrylics with unique properties.

Success story

For strategic reasons, an interleavant powder manufacturer needed to replace their incumbent supplier and approached Makevale to replicate their entire range. We analysed the products, developed improved versions and manufactured trial quantities in less than 3 months. We then scaled up to production quantities for customer testing.

There remained a few small volumes but key products which were extremely specialised. Their components were initially difficult to isolate, and required the development of a suitable manufacturing process. But Makevale thrive on such technical challenges and eventually presented the manufacturer with improved products based on a tighter specification and at a lower price than their incumbent.
